Save the Children is looking for a dedicated and highly skilled Clinical Nurse to join our Programme Operations team in Rwanda. This is a permanent, full-time position designed for a healthcare professional who is passionate about delivering high-quality nursing care, particularly in humanitarian or public health settings.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in managing patient health and illness, supporting nutrition programs, and ensuring the highest standards of infection prevention and control. Reporting directly to the Head of Nurses, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team committed to improving the lives of children, pregnant women, and vulnerable populations.
1. Clinical Excellence and Patient Management
The Clinical Nurse is the frontline of our healthcare delivery. You will be responsible for a wide range of general and specialized nursing duties as defined by MoH and WHO guidelines.
1.1. General Duties and Triage
Patient Flow: Manage triage, take vital signs, and organize patients for consultation to ensure efficient clinic operations.
Direct Care: Undertake essential clinical procedures, including dressing wounds, suturing, and administering nursing care as per doctor’s instructions.
Rational Drug Use: Ensure all pharmacological interventions comply with MoH/WHO guidelines for rational drug use to prevent waste and maximize patient safety.
1.2. Maternal and Child Health
Immunization: Conduct life-saving vaccinations for children and pregnant women.
Referral Care: Provide pre-referral and referral nursing care, ensuring the “Nursing Care Process” is strictly respected during transitions to secondary or tertiary level hospitals.
Communication: Clearly communicate health status to patients and families using appropriate terminology and therapeutic communication skills.
2. Specialized Nutrition Support
A critical component of this role involves addressing malnutrition among the most vulnerable populations in Rwanda.
Identification & Admission: Ensure all children, pregnant, and lactating women are identified and admitted to emergency nutrition programs according to national protocols.
Referral Mechanisms: Establish and maintain referral systems for both moderately and severely malnourished individuals.
Community Education: Conduct health and nutrition education sessions and lead screening activities for malnutrition, including the systematic distribution of supplementary and therapeutic foods.
3. Professional Responsibility and Team Collaboration
Save the Children values continuous professional development and a collaborative approach to healthcare.
Clinical Supervision: Participate in multi-disciplinary education and clinical supervision to maintain high standards of practice.
Evidence-Based Practice: Promote the use of the latest research-based guidelines and participate in quality assurance strategies such as audits and peer reviews.
Team Synergy: Support other healthcare team members, accepting referrals and contributing to an innovative, multi-professional environment.
Continuous Learning: Actively participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) to ensure up-to-date knowledge and competence.
4. Data Management and Organizational Integrity
In a modern clinical setting, accurate data is as important as direct care. The Clinical Nurse will be responsible for the digital and physical records of the clinic.
Surveillance: Follow disease trends by reviewing weekly and monthly morbidity data generated from the clinic to identify potential outbreaks.
Inventory Control: Monitor medical consumption and handle re-supply tasks to minimize stockouts of essential medicines.
Security & Hygiene: Maintain infection prevention and control (IPC) measures and ensure the safety and integrity of the working environment.
Accountability: Complete necessary audits and reports, responding to requests from management to ensure organizational transparency.
5. Candidate Qualifications and Experience
We are seeking a candidate who embodies our values of accountability, ambition, collaboration, and integrity.
5.1. Minimum Academic Requirements
Education: An Advanced Diploma (A1) or Bachelor’s Degree (A0) in General Nursing.
Licensing: Must be registered with the National Council of Nurses and Midwives (NCNM) with a valid, current license to practice in Rwanda.
5.2. Essential Skills and Experience
Nursing Practice: Significant experience working in public or private health facilities.
Humanitarian Context: Experience working in humanitarian settings or refugee camps is considered a significant asset.
Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of aseptic/sterilization methods and nosocomial infection prevention.
Languages: Fluency in Kinyarwanda, English, and French is highly preferred.
IT Literacy: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and digital record-keeping on tablets or computers.
6. Safeguarding and Anti-Fraud Commitment
Save the Children is committed to keeping children safe. This position is a Level 3 Safeguarding role, meaning it involves frequent and intensive contact with children.
Background Checks: Our selection process includes rigorous background checks to reflect our commitment to child protection.
Ethics: We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward fraud and corruption. Please note: Save the Children does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
