The Shift from Authority to Empowerment

One of Sellars’ most profound leadership lessons came during his time in Australia, where he managed a team of 15 high-level professionals. Initially, he focused on pointing out mistakes and correcting employees, believing this would drive excellence. But he soon realized it had the opposite effect—his team felt pressured rather than empowered, limiting their potential.

His perspective changed when he took a three-month break from work. Upon his return, he found that his employees, without constant oversight, had exceeded expectations and delivered outstanding results.

“That’s when I understood that true leadership is not about proving expertise but creating an environment where people can thrive,” Sellars explained.

Leadership in Rwanda: Strengths and Challenges

Having worked with leaders across multiple sectors in Rwanda, including banking, construction, and NGOs, Sellars recognizes both strengths and challenges in the local leadership landscape.

Strengths:

  • Rwandan leaders are highly goal-oriented, confident, and committed to employee development.
  • Many prioritize relationship-building, an essential trait for long-term success.

⚠️ Challenges:

  • Limited open communication: Employees often hesitate to voice concerns, fearing confrontation.
  • Misinterpretation of leadership styles: Leaders pushing for high performance can be perceived as overly strict rather than inspiring.
  • Work-life balance struggles: Many leaders take on too much responsibility, failing to delegate effectively.

“If you want real transformation, you need an environment where people feel safe to communicate openly,” Sellars emphasized.

The Need for Work-Life Balance and Delegation

Sellars warns against overworking and micromanaging, as these practices can harm both productivity and workplace morale. Many leaders feel the need to control every detail, believing it ensures quality. In reality, it limits their teams’ ability to grow and innovate.

“You might think you’re being effective by overseeing everything, but in reality, you’re preventing people from doing their jobs,” he said.

His solution? Delegation and trust. Leaders should empower their teams rather than nitpicking mistakes, allowing employees to develop their skills while focusing on strategic goals.

Bridging the Gap for Young Professionals

While Rwanda is making significant investments in youth education, Sellars notes a gap between academic training and leadership opportunities. Many young professionals struggle to gain the trust of senior leaders, who often prioritize experience over potential.

He encourages established leaders to mentor and invest in young talent, rather than expecting them to command respect simply through seniority.

“Rwanda’s future depends on young professionals stepping into leadership roles, but that won’t happen unless we create space for them to grow,” he said.

A Call for Leadership Transformation

In conclusion, Sellars believes Rwanda has immense leadership potential to drive sustainable development. However, unlocking this potential requires leaders to:

  • Empower their employees rather than micromanaging.
  • Encourage open communication to foster innovation.
  • Balance ambition with mentorship, ensuring the next generation is ready to lead.

With the right mindset, Rwanda’s leaders can transform their workplaces—and the nation as a whole—into thriving hubs of growth and success.
