Rwanda: NESA Announces Official Student Travel Schedule for End-of-Year Holidays

The National Examination and School Inspection Authority (NESA), under the Ministry of Education, has officially released the national schedule guiding how students in boarding schools across Rwanda will return home for the December 2025 holidays. The announcement ensures a safe, orderly, and regionally coordinated movement of students between December 19 and December 22, 2025.

The directive applies to all accredited boarding schools and is aimed at reducing travel congestion, facilitating parental planning, and ensuring student safety throughout the holiday transition period.

⚠️ Why the Schedule Matters

Every year, thousands of students travel across the country at the end of the academic year. Uncoordinated movement has historically caused:

• overcrowding at bus parks,

• delays and safety risks,

• logistical challenges for parents and schools,

• and difficulty for traffic authorities to manage flow.

To streamline this, NESA has implemented a district-based staggered travel program ensuring students travel on different days depending on their home district.

NESA categorizes travel days by region and district, as follows:

Students from the following districts will travel:

• Huye & Nyamagabe — Southern Province

• Ngororero — Western Province

• Nyagatare & Gatsibo — Eastern Province

• Musanze — Northern Province

🔹 Saturday, 20 December 2025

Students from these districts are scheduled to travel:

• Ruhango & Gisagara — Southern Province

• Nyabihu & Rubavu — Western Province

• Burera — Northern Province

• Rwamagana & Kayonza — Eastern Province

🔹 Sunday, 21 December 2025

Students from:

• Nyarugenge, Gasabo, Kicukiro — City of Kigali

• Nyanza, Kamonyi — Southern Province

• Karongi, Rusizi — Western Province

🔹 Monday, 22 December 2025

Final travel day for students from:

• Muhanga, Nyaruguru — Southern Province

• Rusizi, Nyamasheke — Western Province

• Bugesera — Eastern Province

• Gicumbi — Northern Province

NESA provides several important reminders to parents, schools, and students:

1. Schools must respect this schedule

No student should be released earlier or later than their allocated day.

2. Students traveling must wear their school uniform

This ensures easy identification and improves safety during long-distance travel.

3. Parents should prepare transport money in advance

To prevent last-minute transport issues.

4. Local leaders are instructed to support vulnerable students

Particularly in districts far from main transport hubs.

5. Students studying in Kigali but returning upcountry

Will be transported by buses provided at Kigali Pele Stadium (Nyamirambo).

6. Movement is prohibited after 15:00 (3:00 PM)

All stadiums and school grounds will close at this time.
No student will be allowed to depart after the cut-off.
