Kigali, Rwanda – The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has detained three men in connection with the brutal murder of a 53-year-old man in Ruhango District, Southern Province. The victim, identified as Josué Mushimiyimana, was reportedly found with his throat slit.
The incident occurred in the village of Uwimana, Gikoma Cell, Ruhango Sector, during the night preceding Monday, December 15, 2025.
According to the Rwanda National Police Spokesperson for the Southern Province, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hassan Kamanzi, the arrests were made shortly after local authorities and police reached the scene in the morning.
“Various agencies, including the Police, RIB (Rwanda Investigation Bureau), and local administration, arrived in the morning and found the deceased, Josué Mushimiyimana, who had been killed, with his throat slit,” CIP Kamanzi told Umuseke.
Suspects Linked by Property Dispute
Mushimiyimana had been working as a caretaker for an elderly Genocide survivor, specifically guarding a cassava plantation at the time of the attack.
CIP Kamanzi confirmed that three men were immediately arrested as suspects in the murder. The spokesman noted that some of the suspects are close relatives of the victim, and initial reports suggest the conflict may stem from a property dispute.
The arrested individuals are aged 39, 61, and 64, and are currently detained at the Ruhango Police Station pending further investigation.
Kayitare Wellars, the Executive Secretary of Ruhango Sector, corroborated the account, stating that the victim was attacked while guarding the farm.
Authorities have urged the public to always approach the relevant leadership structures to resolve conflicts, particularly property disputes, rather than resorting to violence.
The body of Josué Mushimiyimana was transported to Kinazi Hospital for a post-mortem examination as the investigation into the full circumstances of the murder continues.
