On Monday, November 17, 2025, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan unveiled a major government reshuffle. In her new cabinet of 27 ministers and 29 deputy ministers, she made headlines by appointing her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, and her son-in-law, Mohamed Mchengerwa.
Wanu Hafidh Ameir, aged 43, has been named Deputy Minister of Education, working under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
Her husband, Mohamed Mchengerwa, becomes the Minister of Health.
Mchengerwa previously served in the President’s Office.
In a bold move, President Samia also created a new Ministry for Youth Development, signaling her administration’s focus on youth empowerment. Joel Arthur Nanauka has been appointed to head this new ministry.
The reshuffle comes on the heels of her re-election in October 2025, in which she reportedly won nearly 98% of the vote. Critics have denounced the election as lacking competitiveness.
Who is Wanu Hafidh Ameir?
She is a long-serving politician in the ruling CCM (Chama Cha Mapinduzi) party.
Since 2010, she has been involved in CCM’s national leadership structures.
From 2015 to 2018, she served in a parliamentary legal commission.
Between 2008 and 2012, she led the CCM youth wing in her home region of Zanzibar.
She is also the founder and head of Women’s Initiative Foundation (MIF), a Tanzanian non-profit she established in 2022 to support children from underprivileged families.
Wanu has been a Member of Parliament for Makunduchi Constituency (Zanzibar) since 2005.
