We are seeking a qualified and dedicated Credit and Recovery Officer to support the credit assessment process and ensure effective loan recovery. The ideal candidate will evaluate credit applications, conduct risk analysis, support loan disbursements, and lead efforts to recover or restructure non-performing loans. This role plays a vital part in maintaining a healthy loan portfolio and minimizing credit risks.

Reports to: Credit and Operations Manager
Position Type: Full-time


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Credit Assessment

  • Receive, review, and analyze loan applications to ensure completeness and compliance with internal guidelines.

  • Examine financial statements, credit reports, and other information to assess creditworthiness.

  • Assess risk levels and recommend suitable loan terms and conditions.

  • Conduct client visits and inspect collateral to verify its value and security.

  • Approve or decline loan applications within delegated authority.

  • Propose interest rates and negotiate loan terms with clients.

  • Ensure that clients receive clear and transparent information regarding products, fees, and conditions.

  • Guarantee full compliance with internal credit policies and regulatory standards.

Portfolio Monitoring

  • Monitor loan repayments to identify early warning signs of distress.

  • Review existing client accounts and recommend corrective interventions.

  • Present credit files and recommendations to the Credit Committee.

  • Maintain organized and up-to-date records and prepare periodic reports on loan performance.

Recovery and Restructuring

  • Identify, review, and follow up on non-performing loans (NPLs).

  • Develop restructuring and recovery strategies aligned with company targets.

  • Contribute to profitability through recovery processes, including writebacks.

  • Ensure ethical, compliant, and professional recovery actions.

  • Collaborate with external partners such as debt collectors, receivers, court bailiffs, and lawyers.

  • Work with company lawyers to facilitate efficient resolution of cases in court.

  • Recommend actions related to asset disposal, settlements, restructures, write-offs, and write-downs.

  • Support stressed clients professionally to help restore repayment performance.

  • Strengthen company reputation through improved debtor relations and timely response to concerns.

Reporting and Support

  • Support the Credit and Operations Manager in preparing statutory and regulatory reports.

  • Perform other duties assigned by the Credit and Operations Manager or Managing Director.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or related field.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in credit administration within the financial sector.

  • Strong understanding of microfinance operations and regulatory requirements.

  • Solid skills in credit risk assessment, financial analysis, and credit modeling.

  • Knowledge of Rwanda’s banking regulations and non-deposit taking financial institutions.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client management abilities.

  • High ethical standards, integrity, and discretion when handling confidential information.

  • Fluency in Kinyarwanda and English; French is an added advantage.
