π οΈ Job Summary: Keeping the Mine Running
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance, diagnostics, and swift repair of all heavy mining equipment and associated site vehicles. The role requires a strong diagnostic background and proficiency across mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and auto-electrical components, with a non-negotiable focus on safety and preventative maintenance practices.
β Core Responsibilities of a Mining Mechanic
The successful candidate will manage the following key areas of mechanical integrity:
Preventative and Corrective Maintenance: Execute scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) routines on all industrial machinery and vehicles to maximize operational lifespan and preempt major breakdowns.
System Diagnostics and Repair: Accurately diagnose, troubleshoot, and perform robust repairs on failures related to mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Address auto-electrical issues on complex mining vehicles and static equipment.
Spare Parts Management: Efficiently identify, requisition, and manage the required inventory of spare parts, tools, and materials to ensure they are available for timely repairs.
Safety and Compliance: Ensure all maintenance and repair activities strictly comply with company safety protocols, environmental standards, and local regulations. Actively participate in site safety programs.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain precise and detailed records of all repair history, maintenance logs, utilized spare parts, and time allocation. Clearly report recurring technical faults to the Supervisor.
Collaboration and Support: Effectively coordinate activities with the operations and other maintenance teams to ensure zero unplanned downtime. Mentor and provide technical support to junior staff members.
Emergency Response: Be available for on-call duty outside of normal hours to handle emergency mechanical failures that threaten the continuity of the mining operation.
π― Candidate Requirements
We are looking for a practical, results-oriented mechanic with mining or heavy industrial exposure.
1. Education and Certification
A minimum of TVET Certificate Level III in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, Automotive Technology, or a related technical discipline.
Professional certification in industrial maintenance (e.g., Certified Maintenance Technician) is highly beneficial.
A valid driver’s license is required.
2. Experience and Technical Skills
Minimum of 2 years of proven experience in a heavy equipment or industrial maintenance and repair role.
Demonstrable expertise in diagnosing and fixing faults across mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
Familiarity and proficiency with modern diagnostic tools used for heavy machinery.
The ability to accurately read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and service manuals.
3. Personal Attributes and Work Environment
Problem-Solving: Highly proactive, with strong attention to detail and an ability to troubleshoot complex issues under pressure.
Teamwork and Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills required for effective collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.
Physical Readiness: Must be physically fit and capable of handling demanding tasks, including lifting heavy components and working in confined or varied environmental conditions typical of a mining site.
Commitment: Willingness to commit to a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends, and public holidays, as operational demands require.
