Machine Learning Engineer (Consultant) – IremboAI | Kigali or Remote | 10-Month Contract

We are recruiting a highly skilled Machine Learning Engineer (Consultant) for a 10-month contract to support the development of advanced AI models, including our new Voice over AI capability designed to help citizens apply for government services more easily.

About the Opportunity

The Machine Learning Engineer will play a central role in the full ML lifecycle—model design, training, deployment, and ongoing performance monitoring. You will build new models from scratch, enhance existing ones, and develop scalable pipelines that power IremboAI’s multilingual chatbot and voice assistant.

This is a high-impact role for an ML Engineer passionate about AI for low-resource languages and accessible public services.

Key Responsibilities

I. Model Design, Development & Training

• Build new ML models using deep learning, NLP, and other ML techniques tailored for government service workflows and Voice over AI.

• Refine and fine-tune pre-trained models to boost accuracy, generalization, and inference speed—especially for Natural Language Understanding (NLU).

• Run large-scale experiments, including hyperparameter tuning, cross-validation, and rigorous performance evaluation.

• Collaborate with Data Engineers to build data pipelines for data ingestion, labeling, feature engineering, and model retraining.

II. Deployment & MLOps Infrastructure

• Deploy machine learning models into production environments with strong performance and real-time inference capabilities.

• Develop MLOps systems for model versioning, CI/CD, monitoring, bias detection, and drift tracking.

• Work with engineering teams to integrate ML models via APIs (RESTful services) into citizen-facing platforms.

III. Voice Over AI & NLP Development

• Build and optimize NLP, speech recognition, and speech synthesis models for the Voice over AI functionality.

• Improve user experience by ensuring high accuracy for Kinyarwanda and multilingual interactions.

IV. Technical Leadership & Strategy

• (If senior-level) Provide mentorship, design architecture, and guide ML strategy for the IremboAI initiative.

• Communicate ML concepts, trade-offs, and results clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Ensure compliance with data privacy, security, fairness, and ethical AI principles in public-sector applications.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience

• 3+ years as an ML Engineer or AI Developer working on production-grade ML systems.

• Expert-level Python skills and strong experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar frameworks.

• Solid background in NLP and/or Speech Recognition/Synthesis.

• Demonstrated experience across the end-to-end ML lifecycle, from feature engineering to deployment.

• Experience with MLOps tools such as MLflow, Kubeflow, Docker, or Kubernetes.

• Ability to deliver high-impact results within a 10-month fixed-duration contract.

Preferred Skills

• Master’s degree or PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related field.

• Experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs), transfer learning, or fine-tuning techniques.

• Understanding of compliance and data standards in government or public-sector systems.
