Mining Sector Engineer (Critical Raw Materials – CRM) – NTU International A/S

NTU International A/S, a global consulting firm with nearly 30 years of experience delivering technical assistance and development cooperation projects worldwide, is seeking a highly qualified Mining Sector Engineer to support the EU-funded Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Technical Assistance Facility implemented with the European Investment Bank (EIB).

This part-time, hybrid consultancy role is ideal for senior mining professionals with strong technical knowledge of critical raw materials and experience working in African mining environments.


Position Summary

The Mining Sector Engineer will support in-country assignments focused on CRM sector development, including:
✔ Project identification
✔ Technical assessments
✔ Capacity building
✔ Policy and regulatory support
✔ ESG and responsible mining guidance

The role involves collaboration with government institutions, mining agencies, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) groups, private operators, development partners, and EU Delegations to strengthen sustainable CRM value chains.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical assessments on CRM extraction, processing options, and resource potential.

  • Provide engineering inputs to feasibility studies, market analyses, and project preparation.

  • Support reviews of mining legislation, regulatory frameworks, and national CRM strategies.

  • Contribute to environmental & social (E&S) due diligence, good practices, and responsible mining initiatives.

  • Engage ministries, agencies, ASM stakeholders, and private operators through consultations and field missions.

  • Draft technical reports, assessments, training materials, notes, and sector analyses.

  • Support EIB specialists, project managers, and international experts with country-level CRM activities.

  • Assist with workshops, training sessions, and policy dialogues.

  • Collect and synthesize field data for advisory work and CRM sector diagnostics.


Areas of Work

May include (but not limited to):

  • CRM sector development: resource assessments, value chain mapping, extraction/processing methods.

  • Policy & governance: regulatory gap analysis, institutional strengthening, mining strategies.

  • ESG & responsible mining: E&S practices, ASM formalisation, compliance with IFC/EIB standards.

  • Technical project preparation: feasibility studies, engineering analysis, risk assessments.

  • Capacity building: training of national authorities and sector actors.

  • Stakeholder engagement: coordination with government, private sector, EU Delegations, and communities.

  • Economic & technical analysis: processing flowsheets, investment logic, cost assessments, mine planning.


Qualifications & Skills

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Extractive Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, or related field.

  • Master’s degree is an advantage.

Experience

  • 7–10 years professional experience in the mining or extractives sector.

  • Proven experience with critical raw materials (e.g., lithium, cobalt, manganese, graphite, rare earths, tantalum, niobium).

  • Strong technical experience in mine operations, extraction techniques, processing, or project development.

  • Added advantage:

    • Feasibility studies & technical due diligence

    • ESG compliance (IFC/EIB standards)

    • ASM support/formalisation

    • Mining policy or legislation reform

  • Experience working with government stakeholders and development partners.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills.

  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

  • Excellent English; French or Portuguese is an added advantage.

  • Type: Part-time consultancy

  • Location: Hybrid (remote + in-country African assignments)

  • Duration: Ongoing under CRM TA Facility
